It looks like Flamenco, sounds like Flamenco, feels like Flamenco—so it must be Flamenco, right? Well, not quite. Flamenco is super rich and complex, deeply tied to its cultural roots and regional traditions. But in 1990, German guitarist Ottmar Liebert came along and shook things up. He introduced a Flamenco-inspired style that sparked a global movement. True Flamenco can be pretty intricate and tricky to fully grasp, with all its different forms, or ‘palos.’ But Liebert made it more approachable by blending Flamenco with Middle Eastern rhythms, Latin vibes, and other sounds. The result? Something that nods to Flamenco but is a new World-Guitar sound.
What’s cool is that a lot of the guitarists who’ve embraced this style are based in Canada. With its rich cultural diversity and strong arts community, Canada has become a hotbed for this kind of musical fusion. Many of these artists are immigrants or descendants of immigrants, and they’ve brought their cultural heritage into Canada’s vibrant, innovative music scene.
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to 10 guitarists who’ve truly mastered the Nouveau Flamenco style and highlight their most iconic albums for you to explore. Plus, I’ve got a playlist ready for you to dive into and experience these genre-blending musicians firsthand.
